Gluten Free Product Review: Shabtai Gourmet

A few weeks ago Shabtai Gourmet contacted me to see if I’d like to sample some of their products and write a review about them.  Heck yes I would!
A few days after I responded I received 4 full-sized gluten free treats.  Yay!  Here’s what I got:

  1. Chocolate Chip Cookies
  2. Florentine Lace Cookies
  3. Swiss Chocolate Roll
  4. Raspberry Roll
Here’s some info about the company from their website:
Shabtai Gourmet is committed to servicing individuals with multiple allergens by baking our cakes & cookies in an allergen free dedicated bakery. All of the ingredients that pass through our doors are Gluten Free, Casein Free, Lactose Free, Soy Free, and Dairy Free. We are certified Kosher for Passover and Kosher Parve – otherwise known as Dairy Free- by the OK Kosher Supervision. They oversee our production and ensure the highest quality of our products.
Shipping is always a flat rate of $5.95, which is nice.  You can try multiple products and not worry about your shipping rate going up with each one you add.
I love learning about gluten free companies!

Here are my thoughts on each product I tried:
Chocolate Chip Cookies   image They look pretty!  I had them sitting on a cake platter on my counter and they seriously looked awesome, to the point I almost didn’t want to eat them, so I could use them as decoration (I really should have taken a picture of that).  They are perfect little circles with perfect tiny chocolate chips on the top.  But I guess that’s not the important part.  Taste is what really matters.
So here’s the thing.  Don’t think of them as regular chocolate chip cookies because that’s not how they taste.  They have a cinnamony taste to them.  My brother was the one who pointed that out to me.  I wasn’t liking them when I thought of them as chocolate chip cookies, but once I thought of them as yummy cinnamon chocolate chip cookies I thought they were awesome!
Now onto the next important thing when it comes to gluten free: texture.  These have the same type of texture as those crunchy Chips Ahoy cookies.  I like that.  I love the crunchy.  They are ones that you’ll want a drink to go with them because they are slightly dry.  But the taste really is good.  My gluten eating brother, sister-in-law, and husband all agree.

Florentine Lace Cookie
image   imageI didn’t like these.  At first I thought I did because they reminded me of toffee (which I love)when I first bit into one, but they weren’t toffee.  They had a flavor I didn’t like.  I didn’t like the after-taste either.  Neither did my other testers.  I’ve read some other reviews from people who love them and used to eat them when they were younger.  Maybe that makes a difference.

Swiss Chocolate Roll
image Remember those chocolate roll lunch treats from your pre-gluten free days?  Well this looks like a giant version of those.  How awesome is that?!  Just don’t expect it to taste like them.

I realize it's totally random to have chapstick next to it, but I wanted to show the size.  Plus, Burt's Bees is gluten free, so it fits, right?  ;)

Like the (cinnamon) chocolate chip cookies, I didn’t love this at first.  I don’t know why.  My husband liked it right away, but it took me longer.  But I did end up loving it.  And when I say I loved it, I mean it was gone way faster than it should have been.
The cream in the middle was absolutely delicious and I loved that thin layer of shiny chocolate on the top.  I used to peel that stuff off of my little chocolate roll lunch treats and eat it by itself.  Good stuff!

Raspberry Roll
image image  This was one product I liked consistently from the first bite to the last (which, like the chocolate roll, was not a large amount of time).  The coconut topping and raspberry filling was yummy!  And there seemed to be a slight hint of lemon, which I liked.  The raspberry roll was moist and delicious!

The raspberry roll was mine and my husband’s favorite (and probably would have been my brother’s and sister-in-laws if I’d been willing to share ;) ).

So there you have it!  If you’d like to order some of their products for yourself you can find them here.  Utah does not currently carry any of their products in stores, but if you go to the website you can find out how to request that your local store carry them.
I’m especially curious about their rainbow cookie squaresimage
Wouldn’t those be awesome to take to a party?!

Thanks to Shabtai Gourmet for letting me try these delicious treats!
